To potential Ph.D students:

Note that unlike other professors who want to have a large research group, I prefer a small to medium size research group with around four to five Ph.D students only. This way, I can spend some quality time with my research students to learn/think together, and to explore interesting research problems. You may ask what are the ''requirements'' to be my Ph.D student. Beside having a strong academic background in mathematics, algorithms and programming, the most important criteria is that the student needs to be intellectually curious . In other words, you need to have a ''passion in learning'' . If you think you are qualified, please send me email or come to my office for discussion.

Currently, my group is working one two directions: (1) Theory and applications of online learning (e.g., multi-armed bandit, reinforcement learning,..etc); (2) Quantum algorithms and quantum Internet (which may use online learning algorithms).

For students who have a strong background in mathematics or theory, for example, students who have degrees in Computer Science/Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics and/or Physics, our research group is actively seeking these candidates on the above exciting research projects. The backgrounds we seek, or the knowledge that you will learn in your Ph.D study, are: machine learning, probability, optimization, stochastic processes, statistical analysis game theory, approximation algorithms, online learning, quantum computing,...etc.

If you are interested, please send me an email .

Please apply directly to the CUHK or CSE Department. Any recommendation of applicant from commerical companies will automatically be disqualified from the Ph.D admission.

Quote

Last but not least, the following is a famous quote by Calvin Coolidge (1872), whose statement reflects my research style and my expectation:

Press on: Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence.

Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent.
Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.
Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.

Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.
